Optometrists can get into trouble when they unwittingly believe that they need to wade into the fray to figure out custodial relationships or what the court papers actually said about which parent was responsible for paying for particular items for their child. There is no need for the optometrist to do so. By keeping in mind your rights with respect to informed consent from either parent for treatment of a minor patient and your rights of collection of a debt owed by a minor patient from both parents, you will save a great deal of worry when a minor patient’s parents try to drag their divorce into your optometry office.
